We have a large storm system crossing Michigan today. There could even be some thunderstorms and small hail.
There have already been a few lightning strikes over the southern end of Lake Michigan and western Lower Michigan, west of Grand Rapids.
The National Weather Service at Grand Rapids just outlined where we could have thunderstorms today.
The thunderstorms won’t be widespread or severe, but could bring nickel-sized hail in isolated locations. The thunderstorms will be a novelty for February in most places. Where the thunderstorms won’t be a novelty is in the colder air from Mount Pleasant northward. There the temperature will be cold enough for freezing rain, and thunderstorms can bring heavy rain at times.
Here’s a computer model’s attempt to forecast lightning today.
So it’s not a widespread thunderstorm situation, but don’t think you are nuts if you see a flash or hear a rumble.
