On Thursday morning, war broke out in Europe as Russia launched “a full-scale invasion” of Ukraine. This week, former president Donald Trump spoke highly of Russian president Vladimir Putin and his war efforts, calling the dictator’s moves “genius” and that he’s “very savvy” in an interview. As news of war broke Stateside, late-night television hosts responded to the rapidly escalating situation overseas and Trump’s support of it.

“The Borscht is about to hit the fan,” said Stephen Colbert on The Late Show, of the escalating situation. “Don’t forget, after the show, to stick around for Ryan Seacrest’s Rocking World War 3 Eve.” Colbert went on to roast Trump for supporting Putin. “Every Western democracy is standing in solidarity opposing Putin, with the possible exception of the Republican Party—especially their dear leader, former president Super Callous Fragile Racist Sexist Nazi POTUS,” said Colbert.

“I haven’t seen a president cheer on the Russians this hard since the Cuban Missile Crisis when Eisenhower wore the T-shirt [that said] ‘Khrushchev is a Zaddy,’” he added. Colbert then played a clip from Trump’s radio interview in which the former president referred to Putin as a “peacekeeper” and said that “we could use that on our southern border.”

“So he wants Moscow to invade Mexico?” Colbert asked, before breaking into a mock-Russian accent. “Okay, you heard the man. Let’s gas up the tanks and go annex Cancun. I’m going to rename it Comrade Frogs. Shots! Shots! Shots! Shots! Start firing the shots.”

In his segment A Closer Look, Late Night’s Seth Meyers was also aghast at the former president’s continued admiration for Putin. “I’m no foreign policy expert, but even I can see that virtually no one in the world thinks what Russia is doing right now is a good idea,” he said. “The entire world is aghast and horrified. The only people who could possible think this is a good move are those unemployed fringe weirdos who go on small-time radio shows.”

“No, you don’t gotta say that,” said Meyers, after playing the clip where the former president called Putin’s strategy “genius.” “Well, maybe you gotta say that so someone will pick you up from the Moscow airport when you flee our jurisdiction.”

“It’s just insane that Trump is still so desperate to praise a bloodthirsty tyrant like Putin every chance he gets,’ he continued. “Trump narrates Putin’s every move like he’s Tony Romo calling the last drive of a playoff game. ‘Oh, man, here he comes. He’s setting up at the goal line and he’s going to roll tanks right into the end zone. You got to say, Jim, this is very savvy.’”

Even The Tonight Show’s Jimmy Fallon expressed some disbelief at the former president. “Keep in mind Trump also used the words ‘savvy’ and ‘genius’ to describe McDonald’s Dollar Menu,” Fallon quipped. “Honestly, I’m not sure you want to be called a genius by the guy who clogged the White House toilet with classified documents,” he added, before breaking into his well-worn Trump impression. “Just flush it.

Rather than focus on Trump, Jimmy Kimmel decided to roast a different Putin sympathizer on his late-night show: Tucker Carlson. Earlier in the week, the Fox News anchor took it upon himself to list a bunch of crimes Putin hasn’t committed as an apparent defense of his actions in Ukraine. “Is he making fentanyl? Is he trying to snuff out Christianity? Does he eat dogs?” Carlson asked. “These are fair questions, and the answer to all of them is no.”

Kimmel’s response? “So, in order for you to despise a man who murders his rivals, who murders and poisons people, and is actively trying to destabilize our country, he has to do something to you personally? He has to eat your dog?” He went on: “Thanks, Tuck—thanks for asking all those very dumb questions and then answering them for us. I wanna see the tape Putin has of him, because it has to be something special.”

“Between Tucker Carlson and Pam & Tommy,” Kimmel said, “this really is the golden age of talking dicks on television.”
