A small tornado was seen spinning on the ground in Cape May County Tuesday morning as Tropical Storm Isaias was pushing its way through southern New Jersey, the National Weather Service said. And a second tornado has been spotted in Barnegat Township in Ocean County.
The weather service received a report from a trained weather observer who saw the first twister touch down in the Strathmere section of Upper Township at about 9:50 a.m.
Video clips posted on Twitter clearly show a funnel cloud spinning on the ground, and there were reports of storm-related damage in the area. One report says a large tree fell onto a house near Stathere, possibly related to the tornado.
A tornado warning remains in effect for parts of Atlantic, Burlington and Ocean counties, until 10:45 a.m. Tuesday.
UPDATE (11 a.m.): A new tornado warning has been issued in Ocean County and southern Monmouth County, effective until 11:30 a.m. The weather service said a confirmed tornado was located over Barnegat, about 17 miles south of Toms River, moving north at 55 mph.
Most of New Jersey remains under a tornado watch, which is not as urgent as a warning but indicates conditions are favorable for isolated tornadoes to develop during the strong thunderstorms triggered by Tropical Storm Isaias.
The National Weather Service said wind gusts as strong as 69 mph have been recorded in Tuckerton and 64 mph at the Atlantic City Marina, and stronger gusts will be coming during the next few hours.
One gust of 71 mph was reported in Fortescue in Cumberland County, and one at 64 mph was reported in Harvey Cedars on Long Beach Island, according to the Rutgers NJ Weather Network, which has more than 60 weather monitoring stations across the state.
The center of the tropical storm is expected to make landfall along the Delaware Bay coast of southern New Jersey sometime between 11:30 a.m. and noon, the weather service said. So the Garden State can expect heavy rain and fierce winds throughout the afternoon.
Although the heaviest bands of rain are on the western side of the storm, some heavy showers will be pushing through eastern sections of New Jersey as well as western sections. The strongest winds will be mainly on the east side of the storm’s center.
As of 11 a.m. Tuesday, the storm’s center was about 20 miles south-southwest of Frederickstown, Maryland, and about 70 miles southwest of Philadelphia, the National Hurricane Center said. Isaias is still packing top sustained winds of 70 mph.
