WASHINGTON — After the Trump campaign posted a deceptively edited video of Joe Biden on Monday, Twitter applied a "manipulated media" tag to the content amid criticism.
The Trump War Room, an official Twitter account for President Donald Trump's campaign, shared a three-second clip from a speech given by Biden in which he pushed back on the frequently repeated claim from Republicans that there would be increased violence if Biden were elected president.
"You won't be safe in Joe Biden's America," Biden says in the clip, which was edited to remove the context from Biden's remarks that show he was quoting Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.
"Trump and Pence are running on this and I find it fascinating: Quote, 'You won't be safe in Joe Biden's America.' And what's their proof? The violence we're seeing in Donald Trump's America," Biden said in the full quote.
"These are not images of some imagined Joe Biden America in the future. These are images of Donald Trump's America today. He keeps telling you, if only he was president, it wouldn't happen... well he is president, whether he knows it or not," Biden continued.
Republicans have frequently used violence and unrest that has sprung from from anti-police brutality protests across the country, pointing to cities with Democratic mayors, to push their "law and order" messaging. It was a point repeated during the Republican National Convention last week.
"Do you really feel safer under Donald Trump?” Biden said on Monday.
Biden speaks out: Biden condemns violence 'on the left or the right' and challenges Trump 'to do the same'
The campaign responded to criticism on Twitter over the out-of-context footage by blaming Biden for being "dumb enough to say this on camera" and calling journalists who pointed out the deception "triggered."
"The Trump campaign manipulated a video from @JoeBiden’s speech today because they could not challenge the content of the speech. This is their game. They cannot and will not compete on the facts," tweeted Biden adviser Symone Sanders in response to the edited video.
Doctored video: Rep. Steve Scalise flagged for altered video that claimed Biden wants to 'defund the police'
Trump and his campaign have been flagged for posting manipulated content under Twitter's "synthetic and manipulated media" policy before, causing the campaign to accuse Twitter of bias. Twitter has also flagged misinformation tweeted by Trump about the 2020 election, by hiding or by adding fact check labels to posts.
