The cover pays tribute to Crow’s recent induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

“I’ve always been inspired by Sheryl Crow’s voice and the way she approaches writing,” Sabrina Teitelbaum, a.k.a. Blondshell, said in a statement. “Her lyrics are so detailed but always have a conversational element too. I love when you can imagine an artist isn’t taking on another persona for their songs — they’re just speaking to you like they would speak to someone they know well. ‘If It Makes You Happy’ is a song that has been in my life for so many years and I have been singing it for so long. I have a lot of joy attached to it.”
The cover follows on the heels of Blondshell’s self-titled debut album, which arrived in April via Partisan Records. Teitelbaum — who previously recorded music under the pseudonym BAUM — told Rolling Stone in an Artist You Need to Know profile earlier this year that Blondshell was born out of both her sobriety and the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I take it really seriously, because drugs and alcohol were not a good thing for me,” Teitelbaum said. “It was difficult to go through that and then be in isolation right away, so I turned to music. I had a desperation for writing. I needed to get everything out, like, ‘This is going to help me with all these feelings.’”
Blondshell will hit the road this fall as the opening act for Liz Phair, with shows beginning on Nov. 7. Prior to the tour, she will play two shows in the U.K. and appear at Iceland Airwaves Festival.
