Humanitarian and ministry workers connected to the Southern Baptist Convention of Virginia are locked down right now in the West Bank of Israel.

The sound of sirens and rockets is not uncommon to the people serving in Israel, said Brandon Pickett, the director of communications for the Southern Baptist Convention of Virginia.

"For them living there, they hear the sirens often, I mean the sirens that rockets are coming, so it definitely is not the first time that they've ever heard it. It is the most that they have ever heard the noises," he said.

Now, Pickett said the humanitarian and ministry workers in the West Bank are hearing it much more often.

"These are families that are dealing with this not just on a weekly basis, but now multiple times of the day, hearing the sirens," he said

Even in this crisis, the workers are still serving and helping the Palestinian people that they have served for several years now.

Pickett said they are getting updates from them every few days. "They're safe, they're secure, they can find food and water, but it is locked down," he said.

Pickett had visited for a trip at the end of July, and he said they did feel the tension while they were there, but overall felt very safe.

He said many local churches have trips to Israel planned for the beginning of next year, to tour and serve in the area, but now everything is on hold. "So everything is kind of on hold now to see what is going to happen, how it's going to be resolved and we hope it is resolved very quickly," he said.

Pickett said the Southern Baptist Convention is praying for peace in Israel, and that they are continuing to support and stay updated on the condition of the humanitarian workers.
