PEORIA (HOI) -- In recorded phone calls, Lesli Jett told her sister she was going to commit suicide if she wasn't released from jail soon. She was desperate to see her son, and said she did nothing wrong.

"I want my son, I want out, I need my son...it's my life or Aaron's life, he needs to f****** tell them he did it," said Jett.

Jett made that phone call from the Tazewell County Jail. When she was arrested, police said Jett was responsible for bruising all over four-year-old Tate Thurman's body. Later, Jett would say her estranged husband Aaron Jett needed to tell police the bruises were his fault, so that she could be released from jail.

"I need my son, and he needs me," said Lesli during a call with Aaron.

"I know and that's why I am out here doing everything I can, dude," he replied.

"It's not going to work, you have to tell them you were there and you did this," she said.

The jury also heard from Tate's maternal grandparents, Doug and Carol Kent. Carol testified that in Summer 2019, Tate told her Lesli had caused a bruise on his head. The defense pointed out neither grandparent reported the bruising as potential abuse, even though both are registered foster parents, and mandated reporters.

"What I understand is that you have to see it...could be indications of abuse, I'm not sure," said Doug Kent.

In a 2020 Illinois DCFS mandated reporter manual, there is no mention of a reporter having to be physically present at the time of abuse to file a report. Court resumes Wednesday morning, with more witnesses for the prosecution.
