Michigan has a weather pattern change heading our way. It’s not a weather change that most are going to like.
But it’s my job to tell you about the change, even if it’s unpleasant.
Michigan has generally been warmer than normal since March 8. We’ve had just a couple of days in the last month that were a few degrees cooler than normal. Now a cool spell is going to move into Michigan this week, and become a stronger cold spell next week.
So don’t get too enthusiastic about planting much in your garden besides plants that can handle cold temperatures.
Here’s a temperature anomaly forecast out to April 25. The blue and green denotes temperatures 10 to 15 degrees colder than average.
The temperature forecast below for the next six to 10 days shows a high chance of colder than normal temperatures.
The experts at NOAA’s long range forecasting division, the Climate Prediction Center, think the cold will last to at least April 26.
So just how cold could it be? The forecast below is the high temperature expected next Wednesday, April 21. We may have a few days next week with afternoon highs only in the 40s.
With afternoons only in the 40s, morning temperatures could drop into the 20s next Wednesday or Thursday.
That’s why I say I wouldn’t rush planting anything that can’t handle a hard frost or even a few hours of freezing temperatures.
And the final thing you may not want to see. There is a chance of snow next Wednesday.
We did have much warmer than average temperatures for most of March, and so far to April 12. Now it looks like we are going to pay for the warmth with some fairly cold temperatures for late April.
