Minneapolis schools are canceling in-person classes in anticipation of the potentially volatile verdict at the murder trial of ex-cop Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd.
“We anticipate that a verdict in the Chauvin case could impact in-person learning in Minneapolis Public Schools,” the district said in a statement. “After speaking with Hennepin County sources, we believe we can best serve students and staff through changing the learning format next week.”
School officials said in-person classes will continue on Monday and Tuesday but will be suspended from Wednesday through Friday — with students returning to at-home learning.
The district also cautioned parents about possible protests as a result of the Chauvin verdict, noting that “some students may feel called to participate.”
“We cannot deny the fact that people with ill-intentions sometimes take advantage of communities in crisis,” the statement said. “Please read more here as you consider your decision to allow your student to participate in public gatherings and how it can impact your child, their education, and their safety.”
Parents are also advised that “race may be a topic of conversation” in the classroom.
Chauvin, 45, is charged with murder and manslaughter in Floyd’s police-custody death last year — with jury deliberations in the case due to begin as early as Monday.
Viral video of the incident sparked worldwide protests and unrest last year, and city officials have beefed up security to unprecedented levels in anticipation of a verdict.
