Hoyer explains importance of Strop apologizing for violation originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
The Cubs were the only team in baseball last season not to have a player test positive for COVID-19.
So when Pedro Strop violated MLB’s health and safety protocols earlier this month, it was important the reliever offered remorse to the team, president Jed Hoyer acknowledged.
“These guys have taken this really seriously,” said Hoyer, calling the violation "disappointing," in an interview with NBC Sports Chicago’s Gordon Wittenmyer. “We've had a really good track record, knock on wood, with these protocols.
“I thought the reaction of the players was perfectly balanced and with a guy they respect a great deal.”

Strop violated MLB’s ban on indoor dining earlier this month, going out to eat with several Cleveland players. He acknowledged his mistake to the team, from the front office down to the players, privately, as well as publicly to the media recently.
Hoyer said the clubhouse made it clear to Strop, a longtime Cub back this spring on a minor-league deal, what happened was unacceptable. Strop himself told the media last week “there’s no excuse” for his actions.

“I think Pedro, truly one of my favorites that I've been around,” Hoyer said. “Just an A-plus teammate, person, really cares about all the right things, and he made a mistake. I think that he regrets it.
"I thought the way our team reacted was excellent."
Strop was kept away from Cubs camp for several days, testing negative for the coronavirus along the way. From a pure baseball standpoint, that has delayed his spring training debut, which could be significant as he looks to crack the Opening Day roster as a non-roster invitee.
“That in some ways is the biggest punishment, right? He showed up a little bit late, and now he got delayed more,” Hoyer said. “There is an impact there.”
But beyond himself, Strop's actions could have impacted numerous others, another reason it was important for him to acknowledge his mistake.
"Last summer [following protocols] was a real point of emphasis and the guys really policed themselves," Hoyer said.
"There's team issues that arise and competitive issues that arise, but there’s also personal things. I think guys are hyper aware of both."
