CLEVELAND, Ohio – The first presidential debate ahead of the Nov. 3 election is happening in Cleveland in less than one week. So what do Clevelanders want to hear about?
Debate topics released Tuesday include the COVID-19 pandemic, the Supreme Court and the integrity of the election. Hosted by the Cleveland Clinic and Case Western Reserve University at the Clinic’s Health Education Campus, the debate will be moderated by Fox News' Chris Wallace.
Cleveland.com asked readers on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram platforms what they hope to hear from President Donald Trump and challenger Joe Biden during the debate.
Here’s a look at some of the most frequent responses from our social media followers:
Health care
Readers want to hear about health care, in relation to or separate from the coronavirus pandemic.
“What is the health care plan [do] you have ready?” Facebook commenter Nancy Ann Bodnar Lucas wrote as her question for the candidates. Another commenter, Kathy Antinone, wrote that health care remains the “number one issue” to her.
Commenter Jennifer Armendarez wants to hear the candidates' plan for health care in relation to the coronavirus, asking what they would do for workers that caught the virus but had no health care coverage after they were laid off from their jobs.
Climate change/environment
Right behind health care chatter was talk on the environment. Facebook commenter Mark Caldwell Washington combined both of those topics in his query.
“Nothing on healthcare or the environment? The West Coast is on fire and millions have lost healthcare because of the pandemic,” Washington wrote. “They should be major topics.”
Twitter commenter Paul Pleiss had similar sentiments.
“Climate change is the biggest issue in the world and healthcare one of the most pressing in the country, but sure, let’s talk about other stuff,” Pleiss wrote.
An Instagram commenter with the username mgrizmar suggested Trump and Biden should address a topic that hits close to home: a plan for the future of the Great Lakes.
Potpourri
After sifting through hundreds of partisan replies, a variety of topics were proposed by our social media commenters. Many were listed without further explanation given, but a common theme threaded through them. A few examples from Facebook:
- “The issues that impact people. Economy, jobs, energy, education and health care.” - Dan Turney
- “Education reform, women’s rights, social justice, 2nd amendment rights, energy, economy, and healthcare” - Kevin Bullins
- “Ukraine and China issues would be good.” - Mark Yanichko
- “Healthcare, the environment, immigration, and the economy.” - Joyce George
- “Marijuana and their economic plan to see us through the pandemic, including supporting workers and family own (sic) businesses.” - Cyrus Baker
The truth
While not exactly a topic for the debate, a good number of commenters voiced their hope that Trump and Biden simply tell the truth.
“The truth... about anything really... just say anything that’s truthful,” Facebook commenter Kirk Ries wrote.
“Honesty and not lying to the American people and the world,” wrote Barbara McQueen on Facebook.
Along the same line, commenters are hopeful that some sort of real-time fact-check of the candidates' responses will be in place.
