HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Hastings is taking the next steps towards improving their sidewalks and they are gearing up for future projects that will need public input.
The 2019 Barriers to Universal Mobility study found many problem areas throughout Hastings that need to see some improvements. The city council recently submitted an application for a community development block grant that would help cover a lot of the costs. The grant is for $435,000. The city will be responsible for one fourth of the project which is projected to be about $100,000.
If the grant comes through, the first phase will focus on the four block radius around city hall where the study found the sidewalks in poor condition. The sidewalk project still needs to be approved in the budget which is being discussed at the worksession next week.
“We have to still hear on the budget for this year,” Development Director Lisa Parnell-Rowe said. “I know this is something we want to focus on as sort of a segway to the transportation and parking plan study which is in a much different phase. That’s really in the initial discovery phases.”
Soon Hastings will also be putting out a new survey to learn about transportation and parking needs.
“This is actually pulling all of that together,” Parallel-Rowe said. “This is your master transportation and parking plan and how everything functions and flows together. Be that roadway, be that pedestrian friendliness or even bicycle.”
This plan is different from the six year plan the city released. That plan focuses just on roadways, this will also include parking, traffic flow, trails, and sidewalks.
“It’s going to map out five years from now what needs to be done, 10 years from now what needs to be done, 15 and 20. It will chunk it out into prioritizing what will be best,” Parnell-Rowe said.
A study of the downtown parking was delayed due to the pandemic but they hope to continue it soon as well as learn from the public survey. The survey will be very detailed and people can outline a lot of different issues they have with transportation, parking, and other sidewalk issues throughout the city. It will be going live in the next couple of weeks.
