BROOK PARK, Ohio –

Gunshots: Grosse Drive

A resident called police at about 9:15 a.m. March 18 after hearing what he believed were gunshots earlier that morning on Grosse.

The resident said he awoke to the sound of five or six gunshots at about 2:30 a.m. He checked the video recording in his doorbell camera. The video showed a vehicle stopping on Grosse.

Someone then stepped out of the vehicle and walked to the rear of the vehicle. The unidentified person then either dropped something or loaded a weapon. Then came the gunshots.

Police checked the area but found no evidence that a weapon had been fired. One other resident said that she too heard gunshots.

Damaged property: Interstate 71

A vehicle caught fire at about 11 a.m. March 17 on I-71 southbound.

The driver said she was traveling on the freeway when her car’s “check oil” light activated. Smoke began billowing from the hood, so she pulled to the side of the freeway.

The driver stepped out of her car and opened the hood. Suddenly, the car was engulfed in flames. The Middleburg Heights Fire Department arrived and extinguished the fire.

Fraud: West 140th Street

Westside Supply Co. Inc., 5010 West 140th, was defrauded of nearly $25,000 through a check duplication scam.

The company contacted police on March 15. A $212 check from the company was mailed to a parts supplier in Indiana. Someone made three copies of the check and made the check copies payable in the amounts of $9,980, $9,500 and $5,350 payable to an identified person, who then cashed the checks.

The owner of Westside said he did not sign the original check, suggesting that the signature was forged. Further, the Indiana parts supply company said it never received the original check.

The owner of Westside was sent copies of the checks, and the stolen money was restored to his bank account.

Theft: Hummel Road

A woman living at Cambridge Court Apartments, 14917 Hummel, called police at about 2:30 p.m. March 15 and said a cell phone that was supposed to be delivered to her apartment never arrived.

Sudden illness: Brookpark Road

A Brookpark man, 34, experienced a drug-induced medical emergency at about 4 p.m. March 21 at Park Place Suites, 14011 Brookpark.

A family member called police and said the man was naked and behaving erratically in the bathroom. She said he was a regular drug user.

When police arrived, the man was still naked. He was scratching and punching himself and speaking unintelligibly. Bleeding sores and scabs covered his body. He vomited occasionally.

Police called paramedics and convinced the man to enter the ambulance. He was taken to The MetroHealth System’s Parma Medical Center.

Theft: Snow Road

Two bikes were reported stolen at about 7:30 p.m. March 14 from outside the former Brookview Elementary School, 14105 Snow.

A brother and sister had left their bikes outside the school building to play in the school playground. When they returned, the bikes were gone.

Grand theft: Brookpark Road

Sudden illness: Snow Road

A 38-year-old woman was taken to Southwest General Health Center in Middleburg Heights at about 8 a.m. March 21 after she was found unresponsive in a hotel room at Super 8 by Wyndham, 16644 Snow.

A hotel worker notified police and said the woman had called her earlier from her room. The woman sounded disoriented and said that someone was outside her room. The worker hurried to the woman’s room and knocked on the door, but the woman didn’t answer.

Police also knocked on the woman’s door, but again she didn’t answer. They somehow entered and found the woman kneeling on the bed. Her breathing was shallow and didn’t respond to officers.

Police administered two doses of Narcan, a heroin-overdose antidote.
