POLOKWANE – March 3 marks World Hearing Day and the theme this year was “hear for life, listen with care”.

The theme focuses on the importance of safe listening as a means of maintaining good hearing all your life.

To celebrate the annual event, the principal and teachers at Local Toddler invited audiologist and speech therapist Ronel Kilian to the school yesterday.

The hearing screening of the toddlers consisted of a clinical middle ear analysis and an oto acoustic emission analysis.

“The tympanogram will be normal if there is normal middle ear function. The screening tool will indicate whether there is a middle ear condition present. Middle ear infections and blockage of the outer ear canal is common causes of hearing loss in children. Ear infections are common in children and approximately three out of four children may have an ear infection by the age of three,” Kilian says.

She explains if you have normal hearing, you will produce otoacoustic emissions. If your hearing loss is greater than 25–30 decibels you will not produce these very soft sounds.

“Children can fall behind in school and not realise they don’t understand the teacher because of hearing loss. Even mild hearing loss can cause under achievement. A slight hearing loss due to build-up of cerumen in the ear canal can result in learning difficulties,” she says.

Signs of possible hearing difficulties:
• Asking for repetition or asking to raise your voice.
• Signs and gestures are used instead of talking.
• Sounds in words may not be pronounced correctly.
• No response when called.
• Learning difficulties at school may be experienced.
