Five teens were transported to the hospital Monday following a shooting at an Aurora park near a high school, police said.
The shooting occurred at Nome Park, at 12th Avenue and Nome Street, police said on Twitter.
“There are multiple people shot,” police said in an initial tweet.
It’s not yet clear how many people were shot, however. Aurora police said in a follow-up tweet that five teens ranging in age from 14 to 17 were taken to a hospital, but didn’t specify that they’d been shot.
Police now are searching for what they described as an unknown suspect who was not at the scene when authorities arrived.
Aurora Central High School, which is adjacent to the park, was placed on secure perimeter, police said.
Aurora Public Schools will be sending emails to parents communicating how the dismissal of Central High students will be handled, police said.
Henry Martinez lives across the street and said he heard what seemed like more than 30 gunshots. Nome Park is always full of kids hanging out during lunch, he said. Martinez said he wondered why police don’t patrol the area more.
“It’s so sad,” he said. “These kids are so young — to just throw away their lives like that… it just doesn’t make sense”
