There are three widely accepted condiments for an egg sandwich: salt, pepper and ketchup. The holy trinity of toppings is so omnipresent in our New Jersey food lexicon that we often say it as one word: “saltpepperketchup.”
But what if I told you there’s a fourth element you should be adding to the equation, which will change your life forever?
And what if I told you it’s grape jelly?
Don’t run away! Hear me out. I’m telling you, it’s just crazy enough to work — and I’m not the only one doing it!
I was inspired to sully the sandwich by Watchung Deli (which closed in 2020, and I still miss every day) which crafted the “Gary A.M. Special,” a bacon, egg and cheese with — you guessed it — grape jelly. I’ve seen it done at a few other select shops, too.
But I was harshly rebuked last weekend when I posted a picture on Twitter of the one I ordered at Dixon Deli in Jersey City last weekend. But what many call sacrilegious, I call delicious.
The sharp sweetness of the grape spread contrasts the savoriness of the eggs, cheese, and ketchup, balancing the sandwich and making it even tastier. It works with Taylor ham/pork roll, too (I’ve tried it), but it’s ideal with bacon — I also just prefer bacon in general, but people are mad enough at me as it is.
And let’s not pretend sweet and salty is some newfound combo, especially in breakfast foods. For one, candied bacon is all the rage — a staple at most David Burke restaurants. Maple sausage is pretty standard, even if you’re just dunking your breakfast links in syrup. And don’t act like you don’t love a honey-roasted ham covered with pineapple rings. Shoot, people routinely line up down the block at Scram in Jersey City for ham buns, an egg sandwich with ham, Béchamel sauce and pineapple jam. And if you haven’t dunked a piece of toast with jelly on it into your runny eggs at a diner, let me just say you’re missing an essential 2 a.m. drunk food experience.
Elvis Presley loved peanut butter, banana and bacon sandwiches as well as PB&J with bacon. If sweet and savory is good enough for The King, it’s good enough for you.
Don’t like grape jelly? Try it with strawberry for a subtler sweetness. Or raspberry! Maybe throw some preserves in there — though jelly has a higher sugar content and thus probably works best. How about a tomato jam instead of ketchup? The possibilities are endless.
Don’t knock it until you try it, folks! I Next time you roll up to your favorite breakfast sandwich spot, order a BEC with SPK ... and J.
