AUSTIN – The Dallas Morning News wants to hear from North Texans as we continue reporting about how the state’s new political maps will impact elections and communities around the Dallas Fort-Worth area.
This fall, the Legislature’s GOP mapmakers drafted and passed new political lines that cement Republicans’ grip on power for the next decade but blunt the voting strength of non-white voters who fueled Texas’ population surge.
Critics say the redrawn congressional, legislative and State Board of Education maps do not reflect the growth of the Hispanic community, which made up nearly half of the state’s population gain since 2020. People of color accounted for 95% of the state’s population boom over the last decade, with much of the growth concentrated in cities and suburban areas, census data show.
Republican lawmakers’ strategy to keep control of some suburban seats that are ripe for takeover was evident in North Texas, where mapmakers paired fast-changing suburban and urban areas with large, rural swaths controlled by white voters.
Denton, now a Democratic stronghold, would be swept into the most GOP-leaning U.S. House district in Texas, under the redraw. That means Denton and Dalhart, about 400 miles away at the very edge of the Panhandle, would be in the same sprawling district.
Mapmakers are playing defense in Collin County, redrawing its fast-changing U.S. House seat to thwart recent Democratic momentum and make it safely Republican for years to come.
The new maps are generally expected to withstand legal challenges, but battles over aspects of the boundaries could last several years.
