STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Have you ever wondered what wind sounds like on Mars? Now you can hear it for yourself.

NASA recently unveiled a resource that contains a variety of unique audio clips taken from a pair of microphones affixed to the agency’s Perseverance Rover, includes the whirring sounds of the NASA Ingenuity Helicopter and the unique rumbling of the rover driving on the red planet.

“It’s like you’re really standing there,” said Baptiste Chide, a planetary scientist who studies data from the microphones, in a NASA release. “Martian sounds have strong bass vibrations, so when you put on headphones, you can really feel it. I think microphones will be an important asset to future Mars and solar system science.”

Nearly five hours of Martian wind gusts and other sounds have been recorded during the mission, NASA said, which will allow engineers to gain new understanding of Earth’s planetary neighbor.

“Sound on Mars carries much farther than we thought,” said Nina Lanza, a SuperCam scientist who works with the microphone data at LANL. “It shows you just how important it is to do field science.”

Because Mars has a distinctly different atmosphere to Earth, NASA said a myriad of factors affect the way sound is transmitted on the planet. The cold Martian atmosphere, for example, would cause sound to take slightly longer to get to your ear.

In a separate resource, NASA demonstrates the subtle differences between sounds commonly heard of Earth and how that audio would be experienced on Mars.
