A virtual open house has been launched for Rochester's plan to dredge Silver Lake and remove the 1937 dam.

Information on the project is available online at https://arcg.is/1XiaTq.

“Sediment removal from Silver Lake is part of the necessary maintenance for the Flood Control System," Wendy Turri, director of Rochester Public Works, said in a statement announcing the open house. "It has been over 20 years since the last time it was dredged. Lowering the lake level down for dredging activities provides a great opportunity for the other projects to happen at a cost-savings."

The city has identified improvements to the Silver Lake area that can be done during the dredging process. The proposed projects are expected to increase pedestrian safety, provide needed community enhancements, improve environmental features, and provide alternative recreation opportunities.

“Trail rail development, trail connectivity and engagement with the water have been and continue to be high priorities for the community," said Mike Nigbur, park and forestry division head. "This larger project meets all of those goals and, in doing so, increases the livability of Rochester."

The Silver Lake sediment removal and dam modification project aims to address four main needs at Silver Lake:

  • Dredging, which will restore portions of the lake where sediment has accumulated for many years.
  • Dam modification, which will reduce maintenance costs of the aging structure, increase safety, improve fish habitat and create recreational opportunities. Modifying the dam will not drain Silver Lake.
  • Trail connections along the north shore of Silver Lake and under the bridge, which will enhance trail connectivity and improve safety.
  • A standalone pedestrian bridge, which will enhance the trail system by improving safety and accessibility.

All of these project elements require the lake level to be lowered during construction. Combining these four elements into one project will reduce costs and minimize the impact on park users.

The proposal has seen concerns voiced by many Rochester residents, with concerns raised regarding future water levels and downstream flood protection.

As part of the open house, the city is conducting a poll and soliciting feedback through an email link.

With hopes of finding consensus around a final plan, the city is pursuing several funding strategies for the estimated $13.3 million project.
