Vice President Joe Biden on Monday night slammed the “rushed and unprecedented” confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett.
Biden issued the condemnation in a lengthy statement release shortly after Barrett was officially sworn in to the nation’s highest court.
“The rushed and unprecedented confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett as Associate Justice to the Supreme Court, in the middle of an ongoing election, should be a stark reminder to every American that your vote matters,” the Democratic presidential candidate said.
Barrett, the fifth female justice in the court’s history, will begin hearing cases immediately.
Biden, like other Democrats opposed to pre-election confirmation, claimed President Trump quickly chose Barrett so she could help dismantle the Affordable Care Act in a case going before the high court on Nov. 10.
“This goal — the goal of the Republican Party for ten years — was a litmus test in selecting this nominee, regardless of the damage done to the US Senate, to Americans’ faith in the legitimacy of the Supreme Court, and to our democracy, and regardless of how the Affordable Care Act has protected hundreds of millions of people and during the pandemic,” Biden wrote.
Biden, in his statement, repeatedly urged those who disagree with Barrett’s confirmation to head to the polls.
“If you want to protect your health care, if you want your voice to be heard in Washington, if you want to say no, this abuse of power doesn’t represent you — then turn out and vote,” he wrote.
