BIG RAPIDS - College hockey coaches, players and fans expect to hear within a week the status of the 2019-20 season, which might face some alterations because of COVID-19.
Ferris State is scheduled to be home-and-home against Michigan State that weekend but nothing yet has been announced.
"I think we're getting close," Ferris hockey coach Bob Daniels said on Friday. "By this time next week, I think there will be some decisions made if we'll start on time or if we'll have a delayed start. Up until now, all the talk has been about the fall sports.
"The NCAA has put their efforts into the fall season and what they'll do there. We're an oddity in that hockey is a single-sport conference. All our other sports at Ferris are in the GLIAC. We've waited to see what was going to happen to the fall sports. I would think it will be no later than the end of next week on what we'll look like on a planned start date. As of now we anticipate Oct. 3, and if we have to, we'll make the adjustments."
Daniels previously indicated the WCHA set forth three different models with start dates on Oct. 3, or in November or in January.
The Ewigleben Ice Arena has been closed under state executive orders, but it wasn't immediate clear what action by the governor earlier this week might mean to the Bulldog facility. Some local high school players have traveled up to Cadillac, which is in a nonrestricted zone and where indoor facilities can be used.
Three Upper Peninsula universities at Michigan Tech, Northern Michigan and Lake Superior have access to their facilities.
"I do know Tech and Lake State have been skating," Daniels said. "I don't know about Northen."
Daniels said all of his players are on campus.
"We're really excited with that," he said. "All our international students are here. We've had two team meetings at Wink Arena. They're in the stands six feet apart with their masks on. That was uplifting."
Tim Blashill is Big Rapids hockey coach and also supervises the arena.
"We're taking it slow, but we're hoping towards the end of this month, we'll be able to have our youth hockey and youth figure skating associations skating here, with strict protocols in place," he said. "We are just working with the Ferris re-entry group to gain this approval.
"BRAJHA does have scheduled skates up at the Wex (in Cadillac) starting Sept 14, through the following week. We will keep those in place and hope that (soon), we can skate here."
