Students hear the bell for the first time at Homer Community Schools - KTIV

HOMER, Nebraska (KTIV) - Students at Homer Community Schools in Nebraska heard the sound of the bell for the first time in months on Thursday.

Superintendent Gregg Cruickshank says the entire school staff worked hard on setting procedures, and protocols that would work for everyone's safety, while still having the best learning environment possible.

He says as soon as a student walks in they are given a pump of hand sanitizer as well as a mask if they don't already have one.

He says every classroom is equipped with the necessary PPE. Social distancing is being used whenever possible - and when there isn't enough space, masks are required.

"I don't think we've had a student openly defiant of the mask rule, I think they appreciate and they are thankful for being back to school around their friends, with their teachers, and their coaches, and their activity sponsors, and I think they will do what it takes to make this work," said Cruickshank.

Cruickshank says they have also moved their school nurse to full time.
