With all the technological development in robotics, they fundamentally rely on the senses of touch and vision to perform operations. Touch senses might still be in the development stage, but the use of visual aid to perform tasks might be slightly more advanced. A team at Carnegie Mellon University are now attempting to give them auditory faculties as a supplementary sense to help enhance machines’ perception of their surroundings. In a recent experiment at the University, Rethink Robotics’ Sawyer was seen touching objects in a metal tray to hear the sounds of their movement as they slid and crashed into the borders of the tray. The tray had a total of 60 objects, which comprised tools, tennis balls, wooden blocks, and an apple. They recorded and documented 15,000 such “interactions.”
The robot that the team christened “Tilt-Bot” was able to recognize objects with an incredible success rate of 76% and was also able to identify small material differences between a wrench and a metal screwdriver. With the help of the sound data, Tilt-Bot could correctly identify the object’s material makeup with significant accuracy. CMU assistant professor Oliver Kroemer said, “I think what was really exciting was that when it failed, it would fail on things you expect it to fail on, but if it was a different object, such as a block versus a cup, it could figure that out.”
The research is still in the initial stages, and the preliminary results were published recently. However, the research group believes that it could have the potential to add sound detection to the list of tools in a robot’s sensory databank. The integration of a “cane” is one of the many possible applications of the research, which would allow the machine to tap an object to determine its material characteristics precisely.
