Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee, offered congratulations and words of advice Tuesday to Sen. Kamala Harris after Joe Biden selected Harris to be his running mate.
"Congrats to the democrat VP pick! Climb upon Geraldine Ferraro’s and my shoulders, and from the most amazing view in your life consider lessons we learned," Palin wrote. She and Ferraro – chosen in 1984 as former Vice President Walter Mondale's running mate – were the only other female running mates on major party tickets in U.S. history.
Palin had been Alaska's governor for less than two years and was little known nationally when former Sen. John McCain, the 2008 GOP presidential nominee, chose her as his running mate. Her selection gave McCain an immediate bump in the polls but a series of gaffes and heavily criticized interview performances undercut her and top McCain advisers later said they regretted the pick.
She was often was at odds with McCain's advisers during the race as they tried to persuade the conservative firebrand to moderate her message in interviews on the campaign trail.

Palin gave Harris six tips for handling the nomination.
Her first piece of wisdom was "out of the chute trust no one new." She also told Harris to "fight mightily to keep your own team with you – they know you, know your voice, and most importantly are trustworthy."
"Don’t get muzzled – connect with media and voters in your own unique way," was Palin's third piece of advice.
"Some yahoos running campaigns will suffocate you with their own self-centered agenda," she told Harris. "So remember YOU were chosen for who YOU are. So stay connected with America as you smile and ignore deceptive 'handlers' trying to change you."
Next, she filled Harris in on a couple of campaign glossary terms, such as "OTR," which Palin said meant "an orchestrated campaign stop that’s meant to look un-orchestrated." She gave the example of an entire campaign stop that centered on her trying on new running shoes.

"OTR’s get bizarre (try eating in front of vultures looking for the 'gotcha' shot!) but my team made OTR’s the second most fun thing!" Pailin said.
And Palin said the "ropeline," where candidates greet supporters up close, was the "MOST fun thing" about the campaign.
"Every single handshake and holler and hug and smile melted my heart, energized my soul, and gave me the utmost hope in the greatest country on earth!" she wrote.
Her fifth piece of advice: "Don’t forget the women who came before you."
And finally, "have fun!" she told Harris. "This IS the greatest country in the world and hopefully you’ll be blessed beyond belief, like I was, with meeting new people from all walks of life and see just how great it is!"
Palin promised she would have more to share with Harris in the days ahead, including a story about her first debate with then-vice presidential nominee Biden that she said was "one of the funniest things in my life."
