Glenwood Springs is asking the community for feedback for the South Canyon Management Plan.

“This plan will address the opportunities and challenges surrounding complex land use, recreation amenities, increased development pressure and conservation,” a news release from the city states.

Members of the public will be encouraged to weigh in on management priorities of South Canyon through Aug. 31.

“Community input so far illustrates a general vision for keeping South Canyon natural with interest in how the city might improve safety, conditions and inclusivity of existing recreational uses and better manage the area,” said Trails and Open Space Supervisor Chad Smith.

Community members can share input by taking a brief survey on the project webpage at cogs.us/SouthCanyon . Individuals may also complete the survey in-person at City Hall, 101 Eighth St. The survey is available in both English and Spanish.

The survey will ask people questions about everything from conservation to recreation and other aspects they find important for management in the nearly 3,000 acres of city-owned land in South Canyon between Glenwood Springs and New Castle.

“The public land encompasses historic sites, an archery range, undeveloped hot springs pools, the city landfill, a shooting range, trails, wildlife habitat and unmanaged open space,” the release states.

The South Canyon Area Recreation Management Plan will aim to increase communication around ecosystems, history, wildfire mitigation while maintaining and improving recreation.

“We’ve spoken with South Canyon residents and formal recreational groups, caught folks at a few pop-up events and we want to expand on that input with additional feedback from residents,” Smith said.

The land sits next to two active coal seam fires, federal lands and some residential property, according to the release.
