At its Sept. 21 meeting, the Rotary Club of Glen Ellen-Kenwood will hear from CAL FIRE Division Chief Ben Sitter about the new fire center off Pythian Road in the north Sonoma Valley.
The fire center is located in previously unused facilities at Sonoma County’s Los Guilicos campus. During fire season, the center will house a CAL FIRE firefighting team — a hand crew who can cut firebreaks with shovels, pickaxes, and chainsaws to stop or slow wildland fires. During the rainy season, a fuel abatement team will be located at the center.
The Sept. 21 Rotary meeting will take place at the Kenwood Depot, 314 Warm Springs Rd. in Kenwood, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend, hear the speaker, and learn more about the service projects of the Rotary Club of Glen Ellen-Kenwood. Cost for non-members to attend is $12 and includes food and a no-host bar.
Other club news
In August, the club bought half a hog at the Sonoma County Fair Junior Livestock Auction and donated the meat to SOS (Sonoma Overnight Support) for its meal program at the Grange in Boyes Hot Springs. Glen Ellen-Kenwood Rotary members regularly volunteer at the Grange, helping prepare nutritious breakfasts and lunches for anyone who needs them. The club was happy to not only provide SOS with high quality, locally farmed pork, but also to support the Sonoma Valley High School FFA student who raised the hog.
This year, the club instituted the Rotary Club of Glen Ellen-Kenwood Fire Academy Scholarship Fund, a $1,500 scholarship for a student to attend the Fire Academy. The scholarship is implemented by the Santa Rosa Junior College Foundation, which recently selected our first-ever recipient. We look forward to meeting him and hearing about his goals.
The club meets on the first and third Wednesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. at the Kenwood Depot. Please join us and find out about these and other projects.
