Did Hurricane Ida damage your home? N.J. wants to hear from you. - NJ.com

Hurricane Ida devastated parts of New Jersey in early September 2021.

One man was swept into a storm drainage pipe by raging floodwaters. Several people drowned when their vehicles got submerged on flooded streets. And some were unable to escape from their flooded apartments.

In all, 25 people in New Jersey died.

Hundreds of residents were affected by the storm, and many are still working to put their lives back in order.

Now the state is asking residents to complete a survey about what assistance they need to recover, and how they can better protect their homes and communities from future storms.

The Department of Community Affairs (DCA) survey can be found at nj.gov/dca/ddrm/home/idasurvey.shtml.

“We want to hear from as many people as possible who were affected by Hurricane Ida last September,” said Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver, who is also the DCA Commissioner. “Your feedback is invaluable to DCA and will greatly help our efforts to develop assistance and mitigation programs that maximize the federal funds coming to New Jersey for Ida recovery.”

While there is no deadline for the survey, the state is asking residents to respond as quickly as possible so the state can use the feedback to “help the State better understand the needs of residents still recovering from Hurricane Ida and to better prepare for future storms and flooding hazards.”

Community Affairs said the survey results will help guide the agency as it creates a plan for the $228 million its received in federal Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery funds. The agency has to submit its plan to the federal government no later than September 28, 2022, for its review and approval.

“The survey data will be used to assist the State in dedicating any Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) funding to unmet needs,” it said. “On May 3, 2022, Governor Murphy announced $50 million in HMGP funds for Blue Acres buyouts.”

And, it said, additional funding could be dedicated to additional Hurricane Ida recovery needs based on the results of the survey.
