The Nags Head Planning Board on June 21 will hear a preliminary proposal for a new hotel to be called the Inn at Whalebone. If it is constructed, the four-story, 11,215-square-foot hotel would have 90 units and be located on the west side of U.S. 158 at 6632 W. Pheasant Avenue.
The property is just south of Nags Head Golf Links and the Village at Nags Head, and just north of the Soundside Event site where an event center is being proposed.
House Engineering, P.C. of Kitty Hawk submitted the application and at this time, there is no indication of a development firm, according to Nags Head Planning Director Kelly Wyatt.
At the meeting, the planning board will be presented with a sketch plan, which Wyatt said differs from a site plan because it serves as a mechanism for larger developments generate informal input from the planning staff and planning board prior to a large investment of time and money into a project. This, she added, allows developers to incorporate significant changes that are recommended by the town early in the process.
According to a June 17 staff report from Wyatt to the planning board, a sketch plan review is mandatory for all new development, other than one- and two-family dwellings, in cases where new construction and/or additions have a total habitable building area that is 5,000 square feet or greater.
According to Dare County tax records, the property is currently owned by Stanford and Susan White and valued at $1.116 million.
