Social distancing regulations set up during COVID-19 have put a strain on the music industry. Many concerts and festivals were either postponed or canceled, leaving fans to enjoy their favorite music artists the old-fashioned way; at home with headphones on.
There were many songs released during 2020 that had to be enjoyed from the comfort of our own homes, dreaming about the day when our favorite artists could be able to go on stage again and fans could reunite in large crowds singing along to the music and dancing.
However, with states slowly reopening and the increasing availability of the COVID-19 vaccines, several artists and festival organizers have been selling tickets to their events for later this year and beyond. Ubbi Dubbi was held in Dallas, Texas, and was the first festival to return post-pandemic. The festival was a two day event, from April 24-25.
With more events and concerts planning for the future, here are 10 songs released in 2020 that we can’t wait to hear live.
1. “What’s Done Is Done” by Seven Lions ft. Haliene
This song is beautiful not only through the music itself but also through its lyrics. The music and vocalist Haliene’s voice effectively convey feelings of hope for the future and what it might feel like to be in love.
“Is it possible to feel like you’re in love when you don’t even have anyone to be in love with? ‘Cause that’s how this song makes me feel,” one YouTube comment said.
2. “less of you” by keshi
Keshi’s music always brings out feelings of heartbreak, and “less of you” is no exception. This song was released in his “bandaids” EP in March 2020. Like much of keshi’s music, it starts with acoustic guitar and dreamy adlibs before hitting listeners with nostalgic and heart-wrenching lyrics.
The song describes trying to get over someone but still seeing them and clinging onto them and the residual feelings.
3.“World We Created” by Giveon
This song was released in Giveon’s “Take Time” album and is one of many songs by the artist that feels reassuring and heartfelt, with lyrics about falling in love and giving your all in a romantic relationship.
4. “u ok?” by Jimmy Brown
Another sad song, but it’s worth a listen if you don’t mind more heartbreak. This song is in Korean, but the emotions can be understood despite the language barrier. The lyrics describe reminiscing about a past lover and wondering how they’re doing while trying to move on.
5. “Level of Concern” by Twenty One Pilots
This song’s beat is fun and gives bedroom pop vibes, similar to that of Gus Dapperton. The tempo contrasts the way the lyrics describe the sensation of feeling safe and comfortable with someone, while relying on them to reduce one’s anxiety.
6. “Bedtime Story” by Rini
This song is a simple and mellow R&B song that makes it almost impossible not to move along with it as you listen, but it would be even more amazing to feel the vibes along with a crowd at a concert.
7. “ILoveUIHateU” by Playboi Carti
This song describes Playboi Carti’s struggle with drug addiction and its hold on him. Aside from the deeply personal lyrics, the beats and the music are high energy and would be fun to bump along with a concert crowd.
8. “Goosebumps” by Sen Morimoto
This song was released on Sen Morimoto’s eponymous album and is one of the most relaxing songs you’ll ever hear. While it’s being performed live, swaying along would be as dreamy as the song itself. It’s sure to make listeners feel like they’re floating along on a cloud or lying in a field of flowers skygazing.
9. “Sorrows” by Bryson Tiller
This song is heavy on the bass and R&B elements, with Bryson Tiller’s smooth vocals layered on top. It’s a song that would be comforting to hear in a concert crowd surrounded by people experiencing the same emotions.
10. “Girls in the Hood” by Megan Thee Stallion
This is one of the most popular songs of 2020, with over 300 thousand videos using it on TikTok and over 120 million streams on Spotify. This song is high energy and fun and would be a blast to dance around and let loose in a concert crowd.
While it’s still too soon to say whether all artists will begin to hold concerts again, it doesn’t hurt to start thinking about which ones we want to see and the songs we can’t wait to experience in person. Music is great when listened to in the comfort of our own homes, but nothing beats the way it feels to see an artist perform our favorite songs live.
