Democratic nominee Joe Biden opened up a 28,833 vote lead in Pennsylvania on Friday evening after trailing President Trump by 600,000 ballots on Election Night.
Officials in the hotly contested swing state — which could give Biden an instant win and also crucial to a path to 270 electoral votes for Trump — tabulated another 7,300 votes for Biden and 1,875 for the president just before 10 p.m. as they continue counting mail-in ballots in Democratic-leaning Allegheny County, which includes the city of Pittsburgh.
Shortly before 11 p.m., Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald announced another 2,436 ballots had been tabulated for Biden and another 733 for Trump, telling reporters, “It’s pretty obvious where this thing is going.
The Scranton-born former veep took the lead in his native Pennsylvania early Friday morning.
A Pennsylvania win would see Biden pocket the state’s 20 electoral votes and vault him over the top of the 270 electoral votes needed to clinch the White House.
The Democratic nominee had expected make a victory speech on Friday evening but will now deliver scaled-back remarks on the state of the race.
As the nation awaits the outcome of the prolonged 2020 presidential election, Trump warned against Biden “wrongfully” claiming the White House.
Citing widespread fraud, for which they have provided no evidence, the Trump campaign is mounting an exhaustive legal fight to challenge the vote counts in states such as Georgia, Arizona, Pennsylvania and Nevada where the race is ongoing.
