High school coaches, administrators ready to hear CIF plan for 2020-21 on Monday - The Daily Breeze

The summer is a vital time for high school football coaches as they start to set the foundation for the upcoming season.

Unfortunately, this hasn’t been a normal summer, nor was anything normal about the spring, which also saw teams miss out on another important period for football practice.

When schools were shut down in March due to the coronavirus pandemic, that also ended the practice days.

“I would say we’re three to four months behind,” Lawndale coach Travis Clark said. “We usually take our dead period at the end of school and we’re usually back July 1 and we go all the way leading up to Week 1 and that time is crucial.”

With the new school year starting next month, it will likely be even more time before Clark and his Cardinals can finally get together on the field.

The CIF State and CIF Southern Section offices are set to make announcements Monday regarding the 2020-21 high school sports calendar, and changes to the fall schedule are first on everyone’s mind.

Meanwhile, Gov. Gavin Newsom provided an update Friday on plans to reopen schools for the new school year, announcing that most students in the state will start the year with distance learning only. Most counties will be instructed to keep their campuses closed until they get the virus under control.

The directive applies to public and private schools.

“I’ve heard a lot of things,” Clark said, “but the January start is the goal and is picking up a lot of steam. We would have just a league season.”

Lawndale, along with Leuzinger and Hawthorne, is in the Centinela Valley Union High School District. This week, the district announced it will start the school year with distance learning only. The situation will be reevaluated in September.

When the season begins for football and the other fall sports, the biggest challenge will be keeping kids safe. Some of the professional sports leagues have returned to action using physical distancing measures and regular testing for COVID-19.

“We can’t test the them daily,” Clark said. “I’m sure our (training staff) will have something to take temperatures daily … but what about the locker room, shower? How will I be able to coach?

“I’m willing to coach, but we have to make sure we’re taking all safety measures as possible.”

Lawndale, like many other teams, has been holding online meetings using Zoom. Clark said he hasn’t seen his team in person since March.

“We had a smooth transition to distance learning in March,” he said.

Moving the fall season back will have a domino effect on the remainder of the sports calendar.

The original 2020-21 calendar had Aug. 3 and Aug. 10 as the first days of practice for 11-man football. Other fall sports — girls tennis, girls volleyball and boys water polo — were set to begin practices later in August, and cross country on Sept. 3.

Winter sports were scheduled to begin Nov. 16 and spring sports on Feb. 15 at the earliest.

Several school districts in the South Bay this week started announcing their plans for the start of the 2020-21 school year.

Los Angeles Unified School District announced Monday it will be start the year with online distance learning.

Manhattan Beach Unified is working on a hybrid plan and a distance learning plan, with both to be examined at next week’s board meeting.

Redondo Beach Unified is supposed to announce its plans for reopening next week. Redondo High has placed all Sea Hawk Foundation Summer Camps on hold until further notice.

Torrance Unified has stated it is “committed to being as flexible as possible” for the upcoming school year, and told parents to decide by July 20 whether they prefer online-only instruction or a blended approach that will give students a mix of classroom and online instruction.
