Israel's High Court will hear a petition on Sunday filed against the so-called "Tiberias law" – a law passed in early July that critics say is tailored to the interests of Shas party leader Arye Dery.
The law allows a temporarily appointed mayor to run in the city’s next election after a cooling-off period of just three months, instead of having to sit out a full term first.
But in effect, the law is meant to enable an ally of Dery – Boaz Yosef, the caretaker mayor of Tiberias – to run in the city’s mayoral election in October.
The petition was filed by the Movement for Quality Government in Israel and TLM - Anti Corruption Movement, and claims that the legislation "changes the rules of the game midway through the game." The petition also argues that the law is personal, meant "to benefit one person."
Israel's Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara also opposes the law. In a legal opinion sent to the High Court last week, she wrote that it should not be applied in the city's upcoming election. According to Baharav-Miara, the law harms "important public principles and interests."
