NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to hear a petition by the Gyanvapi mosque management committee challenging an Allahabad high court order directing carbon dating of the 'Shivling', which was discovered in May last year during a court-ordered survey of the precincts of the mosque, adjacent to the Kashi Vishwanath temple, in Varanasi.
Appearing for the committee, senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi said not only has the HC directed carbon dating of the "discovered" structure but also has asked excavations at certain portions of the mosque to determine whether there was a temple underneath the domes.
SC to hear today plea against carbon dating
A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud posted the hearing of the petition against the carbon dating of the Gyanvapi 'shivling'on Friday.
Last Friday, the high court had ordered the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to conduct the carbon dating process of the 'shivling' found at the premises of the mosque, without causing any damage to the structure.
The high court had set aside an October 14 order of the Varanasi district court, which had rejected a plea for scientific investigation, including carbon dating, of the structure.
Justice Arvind Kumar Mishra passed the order on May 12 while hearing a petition challenging the Varanasi court order.
The mosque authorities claim the 'shivling' to be part of a fountain in the 'wazu khana', where ablutions are performed before namaz. The pond complex of the mosque was sealed on May 16, 2022, after a purported 'shivling' was found in the pond during a survey by a court appointed commissioner.
