We Hear You: Speaking Up as Business and Sports Lurch Left - Daily Signal

Editor’s note: Many in The Daily Signal’s audience sound fed up with business leaders and sports stars who won’t stop preaching and virtue-signaling to them. See what you think as we dip into the mailbag at [email protected]—Ken McIntyre

Dear Daily Signal: I just read David W. Almasi’s commentary on responding to woke corporations (“1 Investor With 1 Share Can Call Out Corporate Leftism”) and cannot begin to express how much I appreciate this great idea.

I am a conservative who has been appalled at the dramatic and speedy erosion of our rule of law, freedoms, rights, and economy under the Biden administration.

I have felt helpless to do anything to change things, and the forces against people like me seem overwhelming. I plan on purchasing stock in companies such as Disney, as Almasi’s article suggests. I will then make my voice heard.

Maybe this small step can help make a difference. Thank you for supporting conservative values and offering up ideas that we can use to fight against the enemies of this country.—Lynda Prestarri

I hadn’t realized I could bring up such an item in a shareholder meeting; thanks for sharing it in this commentary. I am an investor in several stocks and mutual funds.

When I receive an invitation to a shareholder meeting, I merely send in a proxy, because the meetings are usually further than I choose to travel.  Great idea to call in to the meeting.—Carole Silva, Union City, Calif.

Dear Daily Signal: I love the suggestion in David Almasi’s article. However, I am one person with limited knowledge of the various leftist positions that companies and corporations are taking.

My suggestion: With all the resources and brainpower available there at The Heritage Foundation, would it be possible to compile a list of companies and issues and potential talking points?

Together, we could make a concerted effort to raise the heat on some of these companies as suggested.—Ralph Evans

Editor’s note: We’ll pass the idea along, Ralph, but the National Center for Public Policy Research’s Free Enterprise Project already appears to be doing what you request.

I am disgusted to find out that Chase Bank is engaging in leftist politics. I have banked there for years and would like to send a letter to the CEO. Do you have a template for such a complaint?

I appreciate The Daily Signal’s daily emails. Thank you.—Jody Winkenbach

Editor’s note: We don’t have a template like the one you suggest, Jody, but perhaps other readers do?

Regarding Ben Shapiro’s commentary “Conservatives Must Fight Corporations That Kowtow to Left,” I realize that my first act to fight back might not be the best. But for those companies where I own shares, I’ve decided to use my proxy vote to vote against every director and abstain from all the crazy shareholder proposals.—Ed Nichols

Interest Flags in Pro Sports

Dear Daily Signal: Regarding Douglas Blair’s commentary, “1 in 3 Americans Are Watching Less Sports. Blame ‘Social Justice’ Preaching,” my interest in sports has waned to the point that I only occasionally watch golf on TV.

Why? Golf is the only sport where if you don’t perform, you aren’t paid.

Kansas City’s quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, was recently signed to a 10-year contract for just under half a billion dollars. That kind of money to play a kid’s sport for six months a year is outrageous. Let us not forget the president makes $400,000 per year.

Over the past 10 years or so, it wasn’t just the woke mob that infuriated me. I used to love football. But games now take three and a half hours because of the horrendous number of commercials. It’s $7 for a measly hot dog, $8 for a 12-ounce beer, $25 to park your car. The last time I looked, the cost of season tickets was $14,000 per year for a family of four.

The final straw that broke this camel’s back started with NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick. It has escalated with the lunacy of the NBA, and now with the pathetic, ignorant rantings of Major League Baseball execs and other corporations that follow suit. I no longer buy their products.

What sports kingpins don’t understand or don’t care is that people watch sports to escape from the daily pressures of life. We don’t want to be embroiled in political science.  We simply want to be happy for a few hours.

I won’t pay the freight to attend or watch a game on TV.  I will not be brainwashed by the dangerous propaganda of the mentally ill left.

All of my peers are in agreement. None of my associates watches any sports, not even golf.  To replace sports, I now watch bizarre programs such as “Married at First Sight.”—Bob DeLaet, Bristol, Pa.

Nothing has hurt pro sports more than the anti-American sentiment started by the NFL’s Colin Kaepernick. Many avid fans, including myself, want nothing to do with the woke, racist mob.

I can live without the NFL, MLB, NBA, and even the NCAA. My local high school teams can fill the desire to watch athletic competition. If Democrats stay in power, even that may wind up in the ash heap of woke absurdity.

I heard a sports talk radio program talking about MLB’s moving the All-Star Game to Colorado. They were wondering if Denver could clean up its homelessness problem near the stadium before the big game. Yet another offshoot of liberal Democrat poison: They ruin everything they touch.—Randy Malcom

If someone had told me before Kaepernick took his knee that I’d be watching fewer professional games even after cutting back on working, I’d have laughed.

This past year I watched three football games (one being the Super Bowl) and zero NBA games. And after this All-Star Game fiasco, I probably won’t even be following my St. Louis Cardinals. Never would have believed that was going to happen.—Jim Mazzei, Tulsa, Okla.

I wonder if women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe (“Amid Economic Woes, Biden Pushes to Make Megan Rapinoe Richer“) has thought about the possibility of trans women infiltrating her game.—Dia Tsung

Please cover the blatant propaganda of the Boston Red Sox television coverage on NESN, the New England Sports Network.

They save it for the later innings, after a softening-up with legitimate commentary by a well-spoken minority announcer in the earlier innings. Thanks to the Almighty for the mute function on my remote!—Neil R. McDonald, Alexandria, Va.

Un-American Proposals in Congress

Dear Daily Signal: I am writing in regard to the recent article by former Vice President Mike Pence about HR 1 (“Election Integrity Is a National Imperative”).

I am American-born. I love my country, the United States of America. My family and I love all people and respect all people. Even in our disagreements we value and respect human life.

What I see happening to our country is absolutely wrong. Our country was founded on Judeo-Christian roots. We are a country that is not perfect but learns and grows from our mistakes. Our country is light, and we are the light.

HR 1, the Equity Act, and the Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act are all dangerous bills. They are unconstitutional and would hurt men, women, and children from all walks of life.

HR 1—the For the People Act—would rig every election and no American would have a true say in elections where the government controls.

The Equity Act would erase women’s rights, endanger our children, add more government regulations, and threaten our freedoms—especially freedom of speech and religion for all.

The Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act was proposed after the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol by individuals who do not represent most Americans. It was created by elites who don’t respect our country or its people. They want to use Jan. 6 as a way to silence and control the people.

This bill would undermine our constitutional freedoms by allowing anyone who disagrees with you to notify the government and have you spied on as a domestic terrorist, perhaps even punished. It would create the ability to curtail anyone’s freedom of speech and freedom of religion, now protected by the First Amendment.

Everything the left tries to paint true, loving Americans as—to promote their evil agenda—is in fact what they are. Their unconstitutional “laws” would dismantle and destroy our country. This needs to be stopped, and it will be. Any American of common sense will see right through it, and we will fight to protect and defend our land and people.

I am the niece of Arlene T. Babakitis, who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center. When I hear House Speaker Nancy Pelosi make comments about the Capitol riot along the lines of “We need a commission like the one we had on 9/11,” she seriously doesn’t know what she is talking about. Because what happened Jan. 6 and what happened Sept. 11 are nowhere near the same.

I ask Americans to stand up, speak, and fight back the right way to help and protect all people. God bless you all.—Melissa Pettignano, Secaucus, N.J

Conservatives Need a Benefactor

Dear Daily Signal: I appreciate your ministry, which is what it is. As a 74-year-old Christian conservative and mild-mannered widow, I don’t have any extra funds to play the stock market or the boldness to speak in a corporate meeting.

I volunteer for our Lake County Republican Party office, doing what I can. But I must say, I am ready to fight. And I am ready to boycott because I feel the only thing these people understand is the bottom line.

What I would like to know is, where are the wealthy conservatives? Oh, I hear from them. A hundred times a day. They all just want a donation.

But where is our George Soros? Where are the powerful, truly committed conservatives? We have a handful of brave Republicans and a pitiful few brave people in the media.

If we the people don’t reach the end of our rope and speak out in whatever way we can make our voices heard, we are going to lose this country. We may have already.

I don’t care if they don’t like the way we communicate. There are as many of us as there are of them. We’re already losing. What are we afraid of?—Marsha Gregory, Leesburg, Fla.
