Dolly Parton is going to teach us all a valuable lesson in patience.
In her recently debuted memoir, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics, the Queen of Nashville revealed that she has written a song that will not be available to fans until…wait for it…I mean, really wait for it…2045(!).
According to Lauren Edmonds at Insider, Parton recorded the song in 2015 around the launch of DreamMore, the Dollywood resort in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The song is on a CD that is buried in a chestnut box made by her uncle Bill and staff have strict instructions to wait until 2045 to open the musical time capsule as part of the 30th anniversary celebration of DreamMore.
Although it was Parton’s marketing team who originally devised the plan to postpone releasing the song, Parton was enchanted by the idea, despite being warned by some that “you’ll be long dead [by the time it’s opened].”
The Queen of Nashville appropriately responded with regal confidence: “Well, maybe not. I’ll be 99. I’ve seen people live to be older than that…I don’t know if I want to live to be 100 or not. But you never know. I might, and if I do, I’m going to be at that opening.”
The sequestered song has been a source of stress for the Smoky Mountain Songbird, who has said that “it’s just burning me up inside [that I had to leave it in there],” according to Randee Dawn at Today. Parton compared the exercise in restraint to “like burying one of my kids, putting it on ice or something...”
If there is one thing that we learned in 2020, it’s that forbearance is rough but has its rewards. We look forward to hearing the song when, as Parton herself wrote, “life is good again.”
