President Donald Trump dismissed Sen. Mitch McConnell's congratulations of President-elect Joe Biden following the Electoral College vote, telling the Senate Majority Leader it is "too soon to give up."
The Kentucky Republican had acknowledged Biden as the presidential election victor on Tuesday in a floor speech.
In a message to McConnell, shared on Twitter, Trump referenced his popular vote tally and said: "Mitch, 75,000,000 VOTES, a record for a sitting President (by a lot). Too soon to give up. Republican Party must finally learn to fight. People are angry!"
In the same tweet, the president shared an article about Trump allies criticizing McConnell.
McConnell, the Senate majority leader, had said: "Many of us hoped that the presidential election would yield a different result, but our system of government has processes to determine who will be sworn in on January 20. The Electoral College has spoken.
"So today, I want to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden."
The nation's 538 Electoral College electors cast their votes Monday, with 306 going to Biden, surpassing the 270 majority needed for a presidential victory.
Congressional lawmakers could object to states' Electoral College votes when they convene to certify them on January 6. McConnell is also among a group of Republicans who have urged colleagues not to go down this route and to stop disputing the presidential election results.
McConnell's comments came despite Trump's continued insistence that foul play facilitated Biden's win. There is no evidence of widespread fraud or irregularities that would change the election outcome.
The president continues to insist there is as do a number of his allies. This is despite several court cases on such points failing.
Trump also previously welcomed a call for people to "ignore the electors," as he continues his push against the results.
Speaking after the Electoral College electors cast their votes, Biden described his win as a "clear victory." Commenting on Trump having received 306 Electoral College votes in 2016, Biden said: "At the time, President Trump calls the Electoral College tally a landslide.
"By his own standards, these numbers represented a clear victory then, and I respectfully suggest they do so now."
