LANCASTER, Wis. (WXOW) - The Grant County Board approved a proposal Tuesday morning that makes the county a gun sanctuary.
The measure was approved 14-2 with one person absent.
Prior to the vote, board members heard comments from people on both sides of the issue.
Kevan Norin spoke in favor of the resolution. A former police officer, he called the measure "pro-police", and "pro-Bill of Rights".
On the other side, Myron Tranel, himself a gun owner, said that there is already a legal process in place. He called the measure a "non-binding symbolic gesture with no power to change" things.
Board member Carol Beals spoke in opposition. She too, called the proposal non-binding and not enforcable and that it didn't belong at the county level.
GRANT COUNTY (WKOW) -- A group in Grant County wants to make the area a gun sanctuary.
On Tuesday, the Grant County Board of Supervisors heard the proposal at a county board meeting.
The idea is not new in Wisconsin. Communities in Marathon, Brown and other counties have discussed or voted on the idea this past year.
People who are in favor of this resolution want to protect Second Amendment rights. They see gun control measures like universal background checks and Red Flag Laws as measures that impede on those rights. Those who aren't in favor of it worry if a gun sanctuary resolution did pass, it could be dangerous for people in the county.
A professor with UW-Stevens Point professor said this issue is all about gun control but doesn't really have legal standing.
"All state laws trump any kind of county measures," Ed Miller UWSP Political Science Professor Emeritus said.
The Grant County Board of Supervisors will hear the issue at 10 a.m. during its virtual meeting.
