LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - As the state begins ramping up the pace in vaccine distribution, local pharmacies are still waiting to see how they will factor into the rollout.
“Let’s just not recreate the wheel,” pharmacist Clarence Sullivan said.
Local pharmacies like The Pharmacy Shop in Lexington have been vaccinating their communities for decades.
“We’ve used the flu vaccine model, we give pneumonia vaccines, we give shingles vaccines, we give tetanus,” Sullivan said. “We give all these different shots and vaccines.”
So, they’re expecting to follow a similar process as the COVID-19 vaccine rollout continues in the commonwealth.
“The community pharmacies should be a primary source because it’s a tried proven thing, they’re out there, they’re ready,” Sullivan said.
While the cold storage requirements may be a bit of an obstacle, Sullivan said many pharmacies have storage units that can handle the vaccine at least short term.
And, especially for rural communities where hospitals and doctor’s offices may be few and far between, community pharmacies could be a major factor in getting the shots into people’s arms.
“As we look into our future and we are vaccinating significantly more people on any given day, we’re going to have to have larger regional sites in every region of the state,” Gov. Andy Beshear said. “We’re going to have to ensure that within a certain drive no matter where you are in Kentucky, there is going to be a facility, a drive-thru, a hospital, or another provider that’s going to help get you through.”
But, right now, those local pharmacies are still on standby for guidance from the state.
