Back to school in 2021: We want to hear from students - San Bernardino County Sun

Back from winter break and in distance learning classes, for some its been a week and others a little longer, however, I hope all students in every district are looking forward to reaching a goal of learning how to be effective and efficient as well as preparing to be even more successful in the next school year.

I must first congratulate all students for attending school in the new year. It is difficult sometimes, but thanks for taking the challenge and getting back on task.

I hope you have enjoyed yourself and are now prepared for the second half of your school year.

What you should be focusing on now is learning how to be a better citizen. Author Tom Bodett said, “The difference between school and life? In school, you’re taught a lesson and then given a test. In life, you’re given a test that teaches you a lesson.”

I hope you have prepared your work area so that your time can be spent listening to your parents as they assist you with your school work.

Please listen to others who have the same interest in you as you have in yourself. Do your best and decide on a direction that will benefit you, your family and your community.

Distance learning is to be mastered and it has been a challenge but please remind yourself how dedicated and patient you are at overcoming hurdles when you have to. Education is a smooth road for some and for others, there are potholes. I hope you are willing to ask for and provide assistance to others as you continue to improve your education.

To students — Please attend school every day as I look forward to having you for a classmate until graduation. That will only happen if you get your rest, sign into your classes on a daily basis and ask questions when you need assistance.

To parents — There are days when I don’t have the energy or desire to do school work but please discipline me so that I will have the knowledge to enroll and complete college. It’s important that I become a mentor to others.

To teachers — I’m sure there are days you think I want to be a burden, but I want what others want, an education. I might struggle and even give up because that is easier than always accepting poor grades. As Dr. Seuss said, “I have brains in my head” but I need you to encourage me to do better. Please help steer me in a direction where I can reach my dream and be highly successful.

We, your school community and your family, want to hear from all students that time is still available to make good decisions about academic goals. Always remember the purpose of education and why it is important for you to reach your full potential. It was activist Marian Wright Edelman who said, “Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it.”

You are our hope for a wonderful and prosperous future. We believe in you.

Margaret Hill is a member of the San Bernardino City Unified School District board.
